Leonora Carrington’s surrealist work inspired the drawings, design, and representation of a house, gallery, and studio for the artist.
Fascinated with the occult, Leonora Carrington viewed the kitchen sink as a source for alchemy. Cooking is seen as a metaphor for Hermeticism, women’s traditional domestic duties, and magic. As a result, the kitchen sink was a pivotal point in the design of the house, acting as a fulcrum that connects the living space with the studio. The water element materialized in the kitchen sink is balanced by the remaining elements of fire, air, and earth in the fireplace, oculus, and elevator.
Leonora Carrington’s work inspired the whimsical colours and psychoanalytic references. All the beings populating the home that appear to have arrived from a different dimension were borrowed from her paintings.
